Established in 1723 as George's Coffee House

Fashionable in the 17th and 18th century, the London coffee house was an alcohol-free alternative to the public house, and served strong Turkish coffee for one penny a cup.

In I830 the coffee house became George's Hotel and then a pub.

The mock-Tudor frontage of the building dates from a redevelopment in 1898.

There are curious carvings in the woodwork: monks, frogs and even a naked man chasing pigs.
