Odeon Cinema
on Shaftesbury Avenue |
A seat on the top deck of the bus brings you to a good height to appreciate the 'Drama through the Ages' frieze which is fixed to the outside of the Shaftesbury Avenue Odeon. The work is by the sculptor Gilbert Bayes who also produced the 'Queen of Time' bronze at the entrance to Selfridges department store and many of the carvings on the exterior of the Natural History Museum. The building was originally the Saville Theatre but was bought in the 1960s by Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager, as a venue for rock concerts, until finally becoming a cinema. |
