Tower Bridge is probably London's most
recognized structure but is often incorrectly referred to as London Bridge (the
next bridge upstream) It has no connection with the Tower of London apart from
the proximity. In the days when London was a busy port with hundreds of ships
arriving with booty from the Empire, the bridge needed to open regularly to
allow river traffic to pass. These days the roadway 'bascules', which weigh over
1000 tons each, are only lifted about 15 times a week. |
